Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)’s contributions towards the advancement and professionalism of science have been further strengthened as UTM experts from Faculty of Science UTM were elected as the committee members for Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (Southern Branch) – IKM(S). It was announced during the 2020/2021 IKM(S) Annual General Meeting on the 7th of March 2020.

The recognition also demonstrated UTM’s continuous commitment towards strengthening Chemistry professional and excellence, especially in the southern region. During the AGM, IKM(S) members agreed to elect Assoc. Prof. ChM. Dr. Jafariah Jaafar as the Vice-Chair.

Meanwhile, ChM. Dr. Sheela Chandren and ChM. Dr. Mohd Bakri Bakar were elected as the Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer, respectively. In addition, Assoc. Prof. ChM. Dr. See Hong Heng was also elected as one of the exco members.

IKM which was empowered under the Chemists Act 1975, strives to promote and regulate the practice of Chemistry in Malaysia. Past experiences have shown various successful strategic collaborations established between UTM and IKM, such as in the form of staff and students’ professional development, seminars, workshop, and community outreach.

Thus, in moving forward, UTM and IKM will continue to work hand-in-hand to strengthen the professional cooperation, as well as strive for the promotion of mutual exchanges. It is hoped that the election of these UTM experts will further elevate the long term partnership between both institutions.
