International Algebra Seminar 2026 Successfully Held at FS UTM

JOHOR BAHRU, Feb 10 – The Applied Algebra and Analysis Group (AAAG), Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), successfully organised the AAAG International Algebra Seminar 2026 (AIAS 2026), strengthening academic collaboration between Malaysian and Indonesian universities.

The seminar was officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr Zarina Mohd Khalid, Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, UTM. The programme brought together researchers, lecturers, and postgraduate students to share recent developments and research findings in algebra and related areas, while fostering new collaborative research initiatives.

During his welcoming speech, the Chair of AIAS 2026, Dr Azizi Rosli, highlighted that the seminar continues the momentum established by AIAS 2024, expressing hope that the collaborations formed will extend beyond the seminar. He also emphasised the importance of collective contributions in strengthening the mathematicians’ community, regardless of the specific research topics and discoveries presented.

AIAS 2026 featured 20 presenters and over 30 participants from several universities in Malaysia and Indonesia. Participating Malaysian institutions included UTM, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Participating Indonesian universities were Universitas Mataram (UNRAM), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), Universitas Indonesia, and UIN Walisongo Semarang. This strong participation reflects the growing Malaysia–Indonesia research network in algebra and pure mathematics.

To recognise the outstanding contributions of the presenters, three Best Presenter Awards were presented by the AAAG leader, Assoc. Prof. Dr Fong Wan Heng, to Nurul Azreen Ardini Mohd Zohan (UPM), Ong Ren Ching (UTM), and Maulani Rizqi (UNDIP).

The seminar was made possible by the financial and promotional support of the Persatuan Sains Matematik Malaysia (PERSAMA) and the Indonesian Algebra Society, whose contributions were important in ensuring the success of AIAS 2026. The seminar also supports UTM’s commitment to nurturing academic excellence and advancing the frontiers of knowledge.

AIAS 2026 provided an important platform for knowledge exchange, research discussion, and academic networking among early-career and senior researchers. Through initiatives such as AIAS, the Faculty of Science, UTM, continues to support international research collaboration, strengthen postgraduate research culture, and promote excellence in the mathematical sciences at regional and global levels.
