KUALA LUMPUR, 15 August 2016 – Three Professors from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) received the 2016 Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) recognition organized by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM).
The three reciepients were Prof. Dr. Sr. Mazlan Hashim, Prof. Dr. Azman Hassan and Prof. Dr. Tharek Abdul Rahman who received their respective awards from the Sultan of Perak, His Royal Highness (HRH) Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah at the Taming Sari Ballrooom, Royal Chulan Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
Prof. Dr. Azman Hassan is an expert in polymer nanocomposite and natural fibres polymer composites. His work focuses on the utilisation of local natural resources to produce value added products. His current research work focuses on developing automotive parts using graphene reinforced polymer nanocomposites.
A Remote Sensing and Geospatial expert, Prof. Dr. Sr. Mazlan Hashim focuses his research on remote sensing application within natural resource management, environmental management and conservation as well in mapping various national strategic applications.
His main contributions are on operational applications of remote sensing in geomatic engineering, aerospace, environmental impact assessment and signal processing.
Prof. Dr. Tharek Abdul Rahman is an expert in wireless communication with research focus on mobile communications, antenna and propagation. He also has obtained many national and international awards, and furthermore, was also responsible for the establishment of laboratories in UTM Wireless Communication Centre (WCC) which includes the Anechoic Chamber, LTE, SAR, WIE and RF Propagation.
In 2014, WCC received recognition from the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) thus becoming the first of its kind in UTM.
Prof. Tharek was also involved in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Working Group as an expert in mobile radio communication systems.
The Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) was selected through an objective and standardised scoring mechanism based on such criteria as Knowledge generation, Knowledge dissemination and Impact of research output.
