KUALA LUMPUR, 23 July 2016 – A group of three students of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has been selected for the Student Parliament Conference 2016 organized by the Council of Former Elected Representatives (MUBARAK) in cooperation with the Parliament of Malaysia and the Ministry of Education (MOE).
The 6-day program that began recently is one of the best programmes in producing quality students and idealistic as the second echelon leaders in the future.
The Executive Committee, Department of Sports and Culture of UTM Student Representatives Council, Ummi Habibah Mohd Zaya said all participants representing every Institution of Higher Learning (IPTA) were divided into 15 groups before the workshop and simulation conference started at the Institute for Rural Advancement (INFRA), Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor.
According to Ummi, during the two-day stay at INFRA, participants were exposed to ethics and how to debate in parliament. On the first night, all participants received badges of Student Parliament and listened to the programme opening speech by MUBARAK President, Tan Sri Dato ‘Sri Hj. Abdul Aziz Rahman.
“The next day we were given a task to discuss a proposal that would be debated in parliament on the basis of proposals presented by the organizers,” he said.
Among the topics discussed were refining the scoring system of the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), producing holistic students, enhancing volunteerism in graduates, in addition to talking about the importance of creating a simulation before the actual conference.
“We again do the simulation in Parliament and discuss the proposals that will be debated in the evening. The first day of the trial ran smoothly. Besides we were having lunch with the Minister at the Prime Minister Department, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman.
“In the evening, we attended a dinner with Prime Minister of Malaysia, the Honourable Dato’ Seri Haji Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak and Deputy Prime Minister,YB Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in addition to continuing discussions to debate tomorrow, “she said.
On the last days of the debating session, two ministers came to show their support on this activity. They were Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato ‘Seri Haji Idris Jusoh and YB Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching (Deputy Minister of Education).
