Sustainability Report 2022: Fostering Sustainable Development for a Brighter Future

The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Sustainability Report 2022 provides a comprehensive overview of UTM’s commitment to sustainability and its efforts to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This report highlights UTM’s progress, challenges faced, and future aspirations in fostering sustainable development within the university and beyond.

UTM is a leading technological university in Malaysia, recognized for its excellence in education, research, and innovation. UTM conducted a thorough materiality assessment to identify the most significant environmental, social, and economic issues relevant to its operations and stakeholders. This assessment involved internal and external stakeholders, guaranteeing that UTM’s sustainability endeavors concentrate on the most significant areas.

Aligned with national and international sustainability frameworks, UTM has developed a Sustainability Blueprint strategy comprising six main pillar Strategic Priority Areas (SPAs). The three elements in SPA 1 (Net Zero Carbon), SPA 2 (Ecosystem Resilience), and SPA 3 (Sustainable Production and Consumption) are the main areas of sustainability related to operation on campus. They are being supported by SPA 4 (Health & Wellbeing), SPA 5 (SDGs Localization) and SPA 6 (Networking & Partnership), which serve as guidance for implementation purposes. The report outlines UTM’s specific goals and initiatives aligned with the SDGs.

Measuring performance is crucial for monitoring progress and driving continuous improvement. This report presents a comprehensive set of performance indicators and metrics that assess UTM’s sustainability performance through the Green Leaf assessment method to assess PTJ’s sustainability performance at UTM. These indicators cover areas such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, waste management, water usage, community engagement, research contributions, and sustainable campus development.

UTM has implemented various sustainability initiatives and projects to drive positive change. These initiatives encompass multiple aspects of sustainable development, including energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, waste reduction and recycling, sustainable transportation, biodiversity conservation, community engagement, and sustainable infrastructure development. The report highlights the impact and outcomes of these initiatives.

UTM recognizes the importance of engaging with stakeholders to foster a collaborative approach to sustainability. The report showcases UTM’s efforts to engage students, faculty, staff, local communities, and industry partners. It demonstrates how stakeholder feedback and partnerships have shaped UTM’s sustainability initiatives and strengthened its commitment to sustainability.
