The Joint International Workshop on Smart Systems 2021 was organized as an opportunity to not only nurture a blossoming research partnership between multinational universities but also to share current and future works in science and technology. Held on 27 July 2021 via Zoom due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the workshop was spearheaded by Prof. Dr. Dyah Erny Herwindiati, Dean of Faculty of Information Technology, Tarumanagara University (UNTAR) in collaboration with Nagoya University (NU) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
The workshop started at 1 PM (GMT +8.00) where the participants were first greeted by Prof. Dr. Dyah Erny Herwindiati with some opening remarks before the keynote speakers were introduced. Then, the first sharing session was conducted by Prof. Dr. Ichiro Ide, a Professor at the Department of Intelligent Systems, Graduate School of Informatics, Nagoya University. The next sharing session featured Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin, Associate Director (Global Strategy and Engagement) at UTM International, and Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, UTM. Speakers were given the freedom to present their research and technological contributions within the scope of the workshop. Following that, a Q&A session was held allowing participants to converse, discuss, and request explanation or elaboration from the speakers. This presented a great way for new and current researchers to develop their interests in the world of science and technology.
In her sharing session, Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin gave an enlightening talk on the topic of Groups and Graphs, Formal Language Theory and DNA Splicing Systems. This one-hour talk was also supported by the members of her research team; Dr. Fong Wan Heng, a senior lecturer at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, UTM and Nurul Izzaty Ismail, a PhD student in Mathematics in UTM.
