JOHOR BAHRU, 15 December 2014 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) became the first public higher education institution (IPTA) in Malaysia to have its own Electromagnetic Testing Laboratory (EMC).

This facility will enable UTM to conduct testing activity to measure the suitability of electromagnetic waves for medical devices.

Dean of the Faculty of Biosciences and Medical Engineering (FBME), Prof. Dr. Jasmy Yunus said this electromagnetic testing laboratory which has been developed at a cost of RM3 million, also provides electrical safety testing facilities, functions and capabilities of medical devices.

“The lab will also be used for research and development (R & D) purposes, besides conducting studies on the effects of mobile phones electromagnetic waves to humans,” he said.

Through this facility, UTM will play a more prominent role in improving the safety level of Malaysian produced medical devices with collaboration from the Medical Device Authority (MDA).

He was met at a press conference session after the launching ceremony of the EMC Laboratory at the Centre of Cardiovascular Engineering of National Heart Institute (IJN-UTM) in Johor Bahru.

The launch was officiated by the Chief Executive of MDA, Zamane Abdul Rahman.

“The establishment of this lab is also consistent with the Medical Devices Act 2012 which requires all medical equipment used on humans must meet stipulated standards before being used by any medical institutions,” he said.

EMC laboratory was built by EMC Global UK Ltd and tested by  Shielding Integrity Inc, a company based in the United States.

The company has been accredited with ISO / IEC 17025 and certified by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program of the United States Department of Commerce.
