MJIIT UTM Strengthens Regional Ties at International Senior Project Conference 2025 in Bangkok

BANGKOK, June 6 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), through the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), represented Malaysia at the 13th International Senior Project Conference (ISPC 2025) hosted by the Faculty of Engineering, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), Bangkok. Held under the theme “Engineering Tomorrow: Technology, Society, and Beyond,” this three-day event brought together engineering students and faculty members from across Asia for knowledge exchange, academic networking, and cultural engagement.

Leading the UTM delegation was Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Kamilia Kamardin, who presented during the university showcase segment. Her session highlighted UTM’s research strengths and international reputation, including its position as Malaysia’s #1 university for graduate employability and its status as a premier engineering and technology-driven institution. She also emphasised MJIIT’s unique Japanese-oriented approach and strong ties with Japanese universities and government agencies, along with mobility programmes such as Sakura Science and Glocal Courses, International Industrial Internship that connect students to industry and academic partners across Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Japan.

As a multidisciplinary institute, MJIIT integrates Japanese-style engineering education with global perspectives, nurturing students across a range of engineering and technology disciplines, including mechanical precision engineering, electronic systems engineering, chemical process engineering, software engineering, as well as management and technology.

Representing MJIIT as student presenters were two final-year undergraduates: Justin Siew Sheng Ung from the Electronic System Engineering programme and Muhammad Hariz Ihsan Mohd Shahriz from Mechanical Precision Engineering. Their participation in the technical sessions reflected the depth and innovation nurtured within UTM’s engineering education.

Justin presented his project titled “Low Power Optimization of ELM Integrated Circuit Design with Power and Clock Gating,” supervised by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Ooi Chia Yee. His research focused on developing energy-efficient hardware for AI applications by integrating power and clock-gating design methods into digital circuit architecture.

Meanwhile, Hariz, under the supervision of Dr. Farah Liana Mohd Redzuan, delivered a presentation on “Fabrication of Silicon-Based Thermoelectric Material via Resin 3D Printing Method.” His project explored the use of additive manufacturing to produce thermoelectric materials that convert waste heat into usable energy, contributing to sustainability-focused innovation.

Both students delivered confident oral presentations during the parallel technical sessions, receiving encouraging responses from the international evaluators and fellow participants. Their performance was a strong representation of the technical depth and research-driven culture fostered at MJIIT and UTM.

ISPC 2025 welcomed over 120 participants from 13 institutions across Asia, including Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), University of Mindanao, Saint Louis University and Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (Philippines), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (Indonesia), National University of Singapore, National Cheng Chung University, National Taipei University of Technology and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan), Iwate University (Japan), and KMUTT. UTM was honoured to be the sole representative from Malaysia.

The event officially opened with welcoming remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chawin Chantharasenawong, KMUTT’s Vice President for Internationalization, followed by a keynote address by Ben Ruktantichoke, Vice President of Thailand’s Big Data Institute. More than 50 student presentations were delivered across engineering disciplines, including mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, mechatronics, telecommunications, among others.

Beyond the academic exchange, the conference also offered enriching cultural elements. A welcoming dinner featured performances by KMUTT and its partner universities, while a guided half-day tour of Bangkok gave participants a deeper appreciation of Thai heritage. Throughout the event, KMUTT student volunteers created a warm and inviting atmosphere, ensuring a memorable experience for all.
