Congratulations Prof. Dr. Khairiyah binti Mohd Yusof, the founding Director of Centre for Engineering Education (CEE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) for receiving the 2018 IFEES Duncan Fraser Global Award for her excellence in engineering education.
The award is given by the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES) at the World Engineering Education Forum in Albuquerque, United States of America.
The IFEES Duncan Fraser Global Award for Excellence in Engineering Education recognizes individuals who have made innovative and meritorious contributions with a significant impact on the advancement of engineering education, and Prof Khairiyah is the tenth recipient and the first person from Asia to receive this prestigious engineering education annual award.
The recognition is given for her tremendous effort to change the global landscape of engineering education, especially in the Asian region and to promote scholarly and evidence-based practices in engineering education.
Prof. Khairiyah is a practitioner, innovator, researcher, trainer, leader and an advocate of student-centred learning approaches which include Active Learning, Cooperative Learning and Problem-Based Learning.
She developed and implemented the Cooperative Problem-Based Learning model, enhancing deep learning and team-based problem-solving skills, enabling students to attain the 21st century outcomes outlined by the World Economic Forum.
Her research focuses on innovative teaching and learning practices, faculty development, curriculum design, talent pipeline and engineering education for sustainable development.
She was an instrumental team member in the design and implementation of one of Asia’s first Master and PhD programs in engineering education.
Based on scholarly principles and her research findings, Prof. Khairiyah designed a series of training and mentoring programs for faculty members and teachers. She regularly conducts workshops on various student-centred learning approaches in Malaysia and abroad.
The successful impact of her work is apparent at the national level in Afghanistan, where she has led a project to modernise higher education in Afghanistan since 2015.
Under the appointment of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Higher Education and with funding from the World Bank, she has been training and mentoring champions among faculty members in outcome-based education and student-centred learning.
She leads several local and international research projects in engineering education, as well as consultancy and commercialization projects in Malaysia and abroad.
Her training workbooks are circulated in more than 25 countries around the world as she continues to train and coach other engineering educators through a community of practice.
She has published her scholarly work on teaching and learning in local and international publications. She has also been active on the editorial boards of engineering education journals, such as the Journal of Engineering Education, the Education for Chemical Engineers journal, the ASEAN Journal of Engineering Education and many others.
As the President of the Society of Engineering Education Malaysia (SEEM), she led the society to successfully bid and host the World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, gathering more than 600 leaders, practitioners and researchers from around the world to meet and collaborate in engineering education.
She was also the Vice President of IFEES, board member of the Research in Engineering Education Network (REEN) and Chair of several international conferences. She is also the recipient of the 2017 Student Platform on Engineering Education (SPEED) Mentorship Award, 2015 Frank Morton Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Global Award for Chemical Engineering Education Excellence, and 2013 IChemE Malaysia Award for Education and Training.
