JOHOR BAHRU, July 9 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has strengthened its position as a leading regional education hub after being selected as the exclusive Malaysian host for the prestigious Westpac Australia-Asia Fellowship Programme.

The visit brought together 35 outstanding student leaders from 14 leading Australian universities, including the University of Melbourne, Monash University and the University of Tasmania. As part of the programme’s Leadership Development Residential 1, the fellows explored the theme Cross-Border Business and Trade, gaining valuable insights into the region’s rapidly evolving economic landscape while strengthening academic and professional ties between Malaysia and Australia.

Welcoming the delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, UTM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr Mohd Shahrizal Sunar, described the partnership as far more than a conventional academic exchange, calling it a meaningful meeting of minds that reflects the longstanding relationship between the two countries.

“Your presence today is more than a visit. This is a meeting of minds, a connection between people, and another bridge strengthening the longstanding relationship between Malaysia and Australia, which has always been one of UTM’s strategic partnerships.”

He said UTM remains committed to fostering meaningful international collaborations, emphasising that the future of higher education lies in partnership rather than competition.

“At UTM, we believe that the future of higher education lies in collaboration rather than competition.”

The Westpac Australia-Asia Fellowship is the flagship initiative of the Westpac Scholars Trust, backed by a A$100 million investment to develop Asia capability among Australia’s emerging leaders. Delivered by the University of Tasmania, the fellowship aims to cultivate deeper regional understanding and stronger cross-border networks.

Prof. Nicholas Farrelly, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tasmania, stated that education continues to serve as the foundation of enduring international relationships, enabling both countries to build upon decades of successful cooperation across multiple sectors.

“We all appreciate that our countries share deep and longstanding ties, and it is often through educational partnerships that we are able to continue building on the foundations of our many great collaborations.”

He also praised the warm reception at UTM, saying the university’s commitment to connection and collaboration reflected the very spirit of the fellowship.

A key highlight of the visit was a briefing on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), where UTM plays a crucial role in connecting research, talent development and industry. Director of UTM JS-SEZ, Dr. Ahmad Nabil Md. Nasir outlined the university’s efforts to bridge researchers, graduates, job seekers, industry and government agencies to support the growing needs of the economic zone.

He explained that UTM facilitates employment opportunities, research collaborations, industrial attachments, consultancy services, as well as upskilling and reskilling initiatives to strengthen the regional workforce and accelerate innovation.

Dr. Ahmad Nabil added that UTM’s strategic ambition is to position itself as a catalyst for regional development and a key partner in fostering collaboration within the JS-SEZ ecosystem.

Beyond the academic sessions, the delegation toured UTM’s Industry Consortium and Technopark, where they were introduced to locally developed technologies and innovation initiatives. The programme also included a visit to Yayasan Warisan Johor, providing participants with a deeper appreciation of Johor’s rich cultural heritage.

The visit underscores Malaysia’s growing reputation as a trusted strategic partner in higher education while reinforcing UTM’s role in advancing international collaboration, talent development and regional economic growth.
