KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), through the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI), Wireless Communication Centre (WCC) and the Ubiquitous Broadband Access Network (U-BAN) Research Group, successfully co-organized the IEEE Distinguished Lecture Series with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Malaysia Communications Society (ComSoc) and Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) Joint Chapter.

The event featured Prof. Swades De from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, a globally renowned researcher in communication networks, sustainable resource optimization and Green Internet of Things (IoT).

His distinguished lecture entitled AIML-Aided Sustainable IoT for Smart Environments: Theory and Technology Development attracted researchers, academic staff, postgraduate students, and IEEE members.

The program provided an excellent platform for participants to gain insights into the latest developments in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML), edge computing, and intelligent resource optimization for sustainable Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

During the lecture, Prof. De highlighted the limitations of conventional network traffic models in addressing the dynamic nature of modern IoT systems. He demonstrated how lightweight AI algorithms, edge intelligence, and data-driven optimization techniques can improve communication efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and enable intelligent decision-making across smart cities, smart grids, cognitive radio networks and other next-generation digital infrastructures. Drawing upon real-world research and deployment experiences, he illustrated how AI-assisted IoT technologies are transforming the design of sustainable communication systems while supporting multidisciplinary innovations for future smart environments.

Prof. De highlighted the rapid expansion of the global IoT ecosystem, where billions of connected devices are expected to be deployed in the coming years. As IoT applications continue to grow across industries, energy sustainability, efficient spectrum utilization, and intelligent resource management have become fundamental challenges. He explained that AI and machine learning are key enablers for developing scalable, energy-efficient and sustainable IoT networks capable of supporting future smart environments.
