JOHOR BAHRU, June 25 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) recently hosted the highly anticipated UTM Mobility Carnival (UMC) 2.0, embracing the inspiring theme “Explore The World, Expand Your Future”. Kicking off on June 23, 2026, the dynamic three-day event transformed the Student Union Building at the UTM Johor Bahru campus into a vibrant hub for global education. Organized to bring transformative study abroad opportunities directly to the university community, the carnival connected students and staff with prominent international partner institutions.
The event truly reflected the spirit of global citizenship, proudly welcoming more than 40 delegates representing 28 prominent institutions across 14 countries. The international representation brought a rich diversity to the campus, featuring participating friends from Ireland, Italy, Hungary, TĂĽrkiye, Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia. Their presence significantly enriched the campus environment, broadened local perspectives and served as a powerful reminder that education knows no borders.
A major highlight of the carnival took place on the evening of June 24, featuring a special welcoming reception and appreciation dinner. The celebratory evening was commemorated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Ts. Dr. Intan Zaurah Mat Darus, with the esteemed presence of the Director of UTM International, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Ariffin Abu Hassan. International delegates were treated to a memorable showcase of Malaysian hospitality through engaging cultural and traditional performances.
Throughout the event, the carnival welcomed about 1,000 students and staff who were eager to network, discover funding schemes, and experience study abroad opportunities. To ensure the campus community could maximize this opportunity, university management granted special approval for staff and students to attend, even those on Work From Home (WFH) arrangements, while participating students were rewarded with ACAD merit. Attendees had the unique chance to explore various global pathways, such as student exchange programmes, summer programmes, short-term mobility options, research attachments and international internships.
Beyond the mobility exhibitions, the carnival served as a vibrant celebration of UTM’s lively campus culture. Organizers successfully integrated exciting student-led initiatives into the daily programme to enrich the overall experience for both local attendees and international delegates. Throughout the event, the venue continuously buzzed with interactive student entrepreneurship showcases and various engaging student activities.
The final day of the carnival, June 25, wrapped up the campus exhibition sessions in the early afternoon before transitioning to a special cultural excursion. International delegates were treated to a Johor Bahru City Tour, allowing them to experience the local sights, sounds, and culture firsthand. Ultimately, the event succeeded in its mission to deepen cultural understanding, foster long-term international collaborations and help the UTM community expand their global professional networks.
