KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 14 — The Software Engineering Association (SOF-EA) of the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur, successfully kicked off SOF-EA Gameathon 2026 with a full day of impactful programmes. Held at Seminar Room 2, Level 9, MJIIT, the event brought together students, academics, and industry representatives in a vibrant environment that emphasized innovation, collaboration, and practical learning.
The day began with the Industry Expert Enrichment Programme (IEEP), followed by a highly anticipated Opening Ceremony, and concluded with Workshop 1: Game Development for Beginners, collectively marking a strong start to one of SOF-EA’s flagship initiatives.


IEEP Session Sets the Stage with Industry Insights
The IEEP session featured distinguished speakers Dr. Muhammad Roslan Muhamad Yusoff and Yong Khor Lord, who shared valuable insights on pitching ideas, communicating technical concepts, and meeting industry expectations. Participants gained practical techniques for delivering effective presentations, with emphasis on clarity, confidence, and storytelling.

The session was further enriched by the participation of 50 students from Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah (PSIS), fostering cross-institutional engagement.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) of UTM, Prof. Ts. Dr. Ali Selamat, also attended, underscoring the importance of industry-academic collaboration.

Opening Ceremony Draws Full House and Strong Institutional Support
The Opening ceremony saw overwhelming attendance, with the venue reaching full capacity. Additional participants joined via live stream, reflecting strong enthusiasm for the programme.

The ceremony was graced by representatives from Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), including the Acting Director, Shahrizan Mohd Shariff, alongside sponsor partners from IIStudy, further strengthening industry involvement. Distinguished university figures, including the Dean of UTM MJIIT, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Nurulakmar Abu Husain; Deputy Dean of Academic & Student Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Roshafima Rasit Ali, SOFEA Club Advisor, Dr. Nur Farhana Hordri and Software Engineer Course Coordinator, Dr. Zatul Alwani binti Shaffiei, were also present.
Professionally hosted by Treasurer of SOF-EA, Salma Annis Abdul Rahman and coordinated by the Secretary, Nur Uzma Umaira, the ceremony proceeded smoothly. Highlights included opening remarks by Project Director, Safuan Hakim, a ribbon-cutting officiation, and the unveiling of the Gameathon theme, “Nihon no Bunka” (Japanese Culture).


A cultural sharing session by the sensei from the Japanese Language Cultural Centre (JLCC) added depth to the programme, with Fumie Ishimatsu introducing participants to yokai folklore, Maiko Okunishi sharing insights on the Sengoku Jidai, and Hasparina Abdul Ghaffar presenting the traditional card game Karuta, providing inspiration for their upcoming projects.

The Opening Ceremony concluded on a high note, marking the official beginning of SOF-EA Gameathon 2026. The strong turnout, seamless coordination, and active participation from both academic and industry stakeholders underscored the significance of the programme as a platform for innovation, collaboration, and cultural appreciation.
Workshop 1 Equips Participants with Essential Game Development Skills
The programme continued with Workshop 1: Game Development for Beginners, conducted by Tan Zhi Chuen and Yee I-Van from Asia Pacific University. The session introduced participants to core game development concepts, including design principles, tools, and workflows.

Designed for beginners yet insightful for experienced participants, the workshop encouraged active engagement through discussions and Q&A. Students from multiple institutions, including Sunway University, Taylor’s University, and Asia Pacific University, joined UTM participants, creating a dynamic and collaborative learning environment.

The successful execution of the day’s programmes reflects the dedication and professionalism of the SOF-EA organizing committee. From managing a full-capacity event to delivering meaningful sessions, the team demonstrated strong coordination and leadership.
