Governance through AI Adoption & Technologies in Surveying

KUALA LUMPUR – The International Surveyors Congress (ISC) took place at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on June 6th and 7th, 2024. The theme of the congress was “Navigating the Future: Trends & Innovations for the Profession.” The event focused on addressing critical issues facing the surveying profession in a rapidly changing world, including the impact of technological advancements, shifting business landscapes, geopolitical factors, sustainability, environmental impact, social responsibility, and governance (ESG), as well as climate change, net-zero goals, and the growing role of digital technology in real estate and smart city development.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ashikin, from the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur, participated in a plenary session titled “Enhancing Governance through Ethical Adoption of AI & Advanced Technologies in Surveying: Addressing Potential Disruption and Challenges Panel forum.” She specifically discussed the lack of specific AI laws in Malaysia and the inadequacies of existing laws to govern and regulate the unique characteristics of AI and suggested looking at the approaches adopted by the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Japan.

The two-day congress featured numerous plenary and parallel sessions, providing a dynamic exchange of ideas and strategies for surveyors to navigate the evolving landscape of their profession. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ashikin’s focus on AI law highlights the importance of adapting to new technological realities while ensuring ethical and responsible practices. The discussions served as a valuable platform for equipping surveyors with the knowledge and tools to shape a sustainable and innovative future.
