Faculty of Science UTM Hosted the 7th International Conference And Workshop On Basic And Applied Sciences 2019 (ICOWOBAS 2019)

The 7th International Conference and Workshops on Basic and Applied Sciences 2019 (ICOWOBAS 2019) was successfully held from 14-17 July 2019 at KSL Resorts and Hotel, Johor Bahru. ICOWOBAS is a biennial event between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Indonesia and Salahaddin University, Iraq, which has been organized since 2007.

Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is honoured to be the host of the ICOWOBAS again for the third time running. This conference was officiated by Yang Berhormat Dr. Sulaiman Mohd Nor (ADUN Kemelah), representing Yang Berhormat Tuan Haji Aminolhuda Bin Haji Hassan, Committee Chairman for Johor Education, Human Resource, Science and Technology.

This conference attracted more than 150 registered participants from 8 different countries. ICOWOBAS 2019 has played a prominent role as the platform for academicians, scientists, researchers and students, particularly in the field of basic and applied sciences, to showcase recent research findings, to exchange ideas and knowledge on the latest progress, and to encourage the development of professional and social networking amongst the participants.

This conference is also in line with UTM’s pledge to ensure its high competitiveness in terms of research and development activities of UTM as a Research University. As such, this conference is important in advancing the efficient and strong national, regional and international networks in scientific research.

In the officiating speech, Yang Berhormat Dr. Sulaiman Mohd Nor emphasized on the importance of having strategic collaborations amongst many partners to better utilize science and technology, especially to deal with ongoing rapid technological changes of Industry 4.0. It was also mentioned that the state government has embarked in various initiatives to build the capacity, capability and competency in science, technology and innovation in Johor.

ICOWOBAS 2019 was also held in conjunction with the National Science Week for Johor state level. Thus, a special activity was organized to highlight the contribution of sciences towards realizing the 17 Goals in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as outlined by the United Nations.

Upon realizing all the targets set by this conference, the next ICOWOBAS meeting has been decided to be held in Surabaya, Indonesia, in the year 2021. The continuity of this strategic event commemorates a strong networking and significant engagements between UTM and its partner institutions to produce outstanding outcomes in the field of sciences.
