NILAI, 13 August 2016 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has carved out an impressive record when it managed to collect a total of seven gold medals at the Malaysia Inter- University Staff Games Championship (SUKUM) 2016 held at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM).

The number of gold medals put UTM in third place on the overall medals (individual) versus Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in second place with a collection of ten gold medals and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) with twenty-two gold medals in first place.

UTM Deputy Chef De Mission, Mohd. Sharul Mohd. Shahimi said that UTM had also obtained two silver medals and fourteen bronze medals bringing the total amounted to twenty-three in all.

“We bagged gold medals in Athletics, Chess Lighting Categories (Men & Women), Tennis Mixed and Women’s Tenpin Bowling Master Category.

“This year’s tournament was the best performance of UTM with 7 gold medals and made history by winning the first gold for the Tennis Mixed Category in the last 41 years since the tournament was first contested,” he said.

Mohd. Sharul said that this success showed major changes in the pattern of the tactical game. Persistence and discipline of athletes to practice and attend five training camps plus a special game training set up by UTM Sports Excellence was also one of the key success factors in this.

“What we need is ongoing support and the new line of players among the staff for the future competitions. Therefore any staff who feel themselves capable in any game is being asked to represent UTM,” he said.

SUKUM 2016 lasted for seven days and received participation from 20 contingents from public higher education institutions (IPTA) nationwide including the Ministry of Higher Education.
