PONTIAN, 19 March 2016 – The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) branch of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in collaboration with the Technical Education Matriculation College, recently organized ‘The Conquest’ programme.
The programme that lasted for three days, was led by the Young Woman Engineers Section of IEM-UTM Student Chapter, with the goal of providing as much information about the diversity of the engineering section, particularly to female matriculation students interested in pursuing a career in engineering.
Programme Director, Lim Pui Ling said that a total of 106 female students participated in the programme.
The programme began with a talk titled “Introduction to Engineering” delivered by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Hayati Abdullah, chairman of the IEM Southern Branch.
“This session was interesting and informative as Assoc. Prof. Hayati used videos showing actual engineering work in describing the application of knowledge learned in the field, “she said.
The session continued with a forum entitled “Barriers and Enablers for Women in Engineering” with guest speakers comprising Ir. Hajjah Masilah Bandi, UTM Senior Electrical Engineer, Ir. Tang Bee Lin, a Geotechnical Engineer from Singapore, Ir. Kaylyn Eng Hui Yi, a Civil Engineer from IPM Engineering Sdn Bhd, Ms. Goh Pei Sean from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Energy UTM and Assoc. Prof. Ir. Hayati Abdullah.
The participants were also involved in games and activities that sharpened their mind in enhancing their awareness on future challenges they might face as engineers.
“Among the activities carried out involved solving puzzles and also other activities involving creativity and innovation skills. This was to ensure that the students can hone skills such as communication, teamwork, innovation and leadership skills, and build self-confidence.
This programme was specifically targeted at matriculation students as these students are still searching for a program of interest to pursue at the university level. The program provides an opportunity for students to better understand how women can also excel in various engineering fields.
