JOHOR BAHRU, 12 October 2015 – The Nuclear Engineering Student Society of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (NESSUTM) in collaboration with the Malaysian Nuclear Power Corporation (MNPC), Malaysia Nuclear Agency (MNS) and Woman in Nuclear (WiN) has organized the Nuclear Youth Congress 2015.
The event was held at the Banquet Hall, Sultan Ibrahim Chancellery Building between 12 and 13 October 2015.
Programme Director, Syaheer Sabri said the purpose of this programme was to bring together students from all over Malaysia who are studying in the field of nuclear-related technology and also nuclear related organization .
“This congress was attended by 101 participant from 7 Malaysian universities and also 7 local and international speakers.
“Among the speakers  were from International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC), Badan Tenaga Nuklir Nasional (BATAN) from Indonesia and five local agencies,” he said.
Apart from academic lectures, the congress also had 6 exhibition booths  related to nuclear technology with not only local organisations, but also international organisations such as  Westinghouse (USA), China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) taking part in the exhibition.
“Besides bringing together nuclear students and organisations, the aim of the congress is also to form a new organization called the Malaysian Nuclear Youth Network (MNYN) which aims to become the driving force to the development of nuclear technology among  youths in Malaysia.
With the theme ‘Aspire to Inspire: Empowering Youth in Nuclear ‘, this program is expected to be a stepping stone to the participants and the Secretariat itself  and become an agent to change the stigma that comes with the use of nuclear energy as something extremely dangerous.
The Nuclear Youth Congress 2015 will also provide a valuable platform as a means of communication between university students and organizations related to this field.
The congress  was officially launched by the Chief Executive Officer of MNPC, Dr. Mohd Zamzam Jaafar accompanied by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ghazali Mohd Nawawi, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering (FCEE) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Sani Hj. Ahmad, representative of the UTM Vice-Chancellor.
