Kuala Lumpur, 30 July – Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have forged a strategic partnership to launch a new sponsorship programme designed to financially support outstanding and deserving Malaysian students pursuing higher education at UTM.
Through this Memorandum of Agreement (MoU), Huawei Malaysia commits RM60,000 annually to sponsor six students, providing each recipient with RM10,000 per year to cover their tuition fees. This financial support will be applied retrospectively to the first semester if the sponsored student has already advanced to the second semester.
Eligible students are Malaysian citizens enrolled in their second to fourth year of studies at UTM with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.20. Students holding Huawei Certified ICT Associate (HCIA), Huawei Certified ICT Professional (HCIP), or Huawei Certified ICT Expert (HCIE) certifications will have an advantage during the selection process. Additionally, participants in Huawei’s Seeds for the Future programme, Huawei Sales Elite Challenge, and other Huawei training initiatives will receive priority consideration.
Upon graduation, sponsored students can choose to embark on a rewarding career with Huawei, committing to a minimum of two years of service.
Mr. Oliver Liu, Vice Chancellor of Huawei ASEAN Academy, emphasized the critical importance of collaboration between academic institutions and industry in preparing the future workforce. He stated, “By leveling the playing field in terms of opportunity to higher education, we are unearthing talent and addressing skill mismatches. Through proactive engagement and a shared commitment to excellence, academia and industry can work in tandem towards collectively supporting successful educational outcomes that will, in turn, be key to the nation’s digital transformation goals.”
Supporting the programme, UTM’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Students Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Ts. Dr Ali Selamat commented, “At UTM, we are committed to producing the best students and graduates to meet the demands of the job market. Various initiatives ensure UTM graduates are not only academically excellent but also prepared to face workforce challenges. UTM students gain career preparedness skills through Talent Competency Management, which is compulsory for our final year students.”
In addition to this sponsorship programme, Huawei Malaysia is actively involved in various talent development initiatives, including establishing Huawei ICT Academies in numerous public and private universities nationwide to cultivate high-calibre ICT professionals.
Since 2021, Huawei Malaysia has produced 54,000 talents through the Huawei ASEAN Academy and is on track to achieve its target of producing 50,000 digital talents in Malaysia by 2025.
