KUALA LUMPUR, 8 May – An expert in computer science from the Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Prof. Dr Mohd Nazri Kama was appointed as the Director General of Department of Personal Data Protection (JPDP).
Prof. Mohd Nazri is a renowned expert in the fields of Data Management, Computer System Development and Data Analytics.
Prof. Mohd Nazri holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Software Engineering from the University of Western Australia, a Master’s degree in Real-time Software Engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in Database Management from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
His expertise has been recognized through appointments to several posts such as Special Advisor to the Minister at the Ministry of Communications and Digital, Commissioner at the Companies Commission of Malaysia, a Visiting Fellow in Data Analytics at the Malaysian Maritime Institute and as an Expert Panel Member for Research Grants at both the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI).
He has also served as a consultant for the Development of Strategic Research Center in the Federal Territories Ministry.
In addition, he has extensive experience in university administration as Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation at the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (2018-2021), Deputy Dean ( Research, Innovation, Commercialization and Networking) (2017-2018) and as Head of the Department of Advanced Informatics, UTM Kuala Lumpur (2015-2017).
The Department of Personal Data Protection (JPDP) is an agency under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM). This Department was established in May 16, 2011 after the Parliament passed the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) 2009.
The main responsibility of this Department is to enforce and regulate PDPA in Malaysia. PDPA focuses on the processing of personal data in commercial transactions and avoid of misuse of personal data.
In enforcing in the PDPA, this Department has been mandated to register all classes of Data Users under Order of Minister.
This Department is headed by Director General cum Commissioner, assisted by a Deputy Director General. Meanwhile, there are three main divisions in the Department namely the Registration and Operation Division, Monitoring Division and Legal Division.
