JOHOR BAHRU, Jan 18 – International Students Society (ISS) Egypt at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) recently hosted a successful workshop aimed at introducing students to the fundamentals of SolidWorks, a widely-used 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. The event attracted a diverse group of students from various engineering disciplines, including mechanical, aerospace, and automotive, eager to gain practical skills in this industry-standard tool.
SolidWorks plays a crucial role in modern engineering, enabling engineers to design, analyze, and simulate complex 3D models before physical prototypes are even created. This significantly reduces development time, minimizes costs, and improves the overall quality of products. Recognizing the importance of this skill, the Egyptian Student Society aimed to provide students with a strong foundation in SolidWorks’ core functionalities.

The comprehensive workshop covered a wide range of essential topics. Participants were introduced to the basics of part modeling, learning how to create 3D models of individual components using various features such as extrudes, revolves, and lofts. They also delved into assembly modeling, understanding how to combine individual parts into complex assemblies while applying constraints and defining motions to simulate real-world scenarios.
Furthermore, the workshop covered the crucial aspect of drawing creation. Participants learned how to generate 2D technical drawings from their 3D models, a vital skill for manufacturing and documentation purposes. Finally, the workshop touched upon basic rendering and visualization techniques, enabling students to create visually appealing representations of their 3D models to effectively communicate their designs to others.

“We were extremely pleased with the enthusiastic response from the students,” said Fahed Qannita, a Mechatronics Engineering student at UTM specializing in Robotics & Automation. He was the Ex-Head of Mechanical Department In UTM ROBOCON 23/24 Team. “SolidWorks is a highly valuable tool for engineers, and we believe that equipping students with these foundational skills will significantly enhance their employability and contribute to their academic success.”
The workshop blended theoretical concepts with hands-on practical sessions. Participants actively engaged with the software, working through a series of exercises designed to reinforce their understanding of the concepts covered. Experienced instructors from the Egyptian Student Society provided guidance and support throughout the sessions, ensuring that participants could effectively apply the learned skills and address any challenges they encountered. The Egyptian Student Society at UTM remains committed to organizing workshops and events that enhance the skills and knowledge of UTM students. By providing access to valuable industry-relevant skills, they strive to empower students and prepare them for successful careers in engineering and related fields.
