JOHOR BAHRU, June 12 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) successfully hosted the 15th International Space Syntax Symposium (SSS15) from 8 to 12 June 2026 in Johor Bahru, marking the first-ever hosting of the prestigious biennial symposium in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The achievement culminates a six-year effort during which UTM secured the hosting rights after three rounds of competitive international bidding, reflecting the University’s growing leadership in the global field of space syntax.

Organised by the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU), UTM, and chaired by Assoc. Prof. Sharifah Salwa Syed Mahdzar, the symposium brought together researchers, academics, industry practitioners and professionals from 43 countries, representing 60 international institutions, through both in-person and online participation.

Held under the theme, “Advancement in Space Syntax: Enhancing Connectivity Across the Global South,” SSS15 highlighted the role of space syntax as an evidence-based approach that bridges research, policy, professional practice and industry while embracing the cultural and environmental diversity of Southeast Asia.

Beyond serving as a platform for international scholarly exchange, the successful hosting of SSS15 underscores UTM’s strategic role in advancing impactful research that connects academia, government and industry. Space syntax continues to inform real-world applications in urban planning, transportation systems and sustainable city development. The symposium also facilitated knowledge transfer between international experts and local practitioners, strengthening Malaysia’s capacity for evidence-based spatial planning, urban design and spatial innovation, while reinforcing UTM’s contribution to addressing urban challenges across the Global South.

The symposium featured internationally renowned experts, including Prof. Alan Penn, Prof. Tim Stonor and Prof. Sean Hanna from University College London (UCL), who shared global perspectives on advancing space syntax research and its practical applications in creating better-connected, more liveable and sustainable environments. The symposium was officially opened by UTM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International), Prof. Ts. Dr. Intan Zaurah Mat Darus.

A significant milestone arising from SSS15 was the appointment of its Chair, Assoc. Prof. Sharifah Salwa Syed Mahdzar, to the Global Space Syntax Steering Committee. The appointment further strengthens UTM’s representation within the international governance of the space syntax research network and recognises the University’s continuing contribution to advancing the discipline.

The symposium also strengthened regional engagement through a conference dinner graced by the Guest of Honour, Johor State Treasurer Dato’ Hj. Mohd. Noorazam Dato’ Hj. Osman, as well as technical visits hosted by Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB). On the second day of the symposium, delegates also toured the UTM campus under a programme organised by the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) and the UTM Geotourism initiative, featuring geotourism attractions including the aquifer and Cerapan Hill.

SSS15 also received considerable international visibility through delegates’ social media engagement. Members of the Global Space Syntax Steering Committee, together with keynote speakers and representatives from Space Syntax Limited (London), shared reflections highlighting the quality of discussions, the diversity of research presented and the productive exchange between academia and professional practice.

The symposium concluded with strengthened collaborations involving ETH Zurich–Singapore, the National University of Singapore and CREATE institutions in Singapore, creating new opportunities for future research partnerships and industry engagement. Through the successful hosting of SSS15, UTM has further strengthened its position as a leading international contributor to the advancement of space syntax research and its application to urban planning, policy, design practice and sustainable development.
