KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Peking University have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen academic, research, and student collaboration, reinforcing higher education ties between Malaysia and China.

Peking University is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading universities, currently ranked 14th in the QS World University Rankings, and a flagship institution in China, with strong research leadership particularly in science and engineering.

The collaboration will focus on priority areas including biomedical engineering, materials science, and environment and energy, encompassing joint research initiatives, academic and student exchanges, postgraduate supervision, and collaborative academic programmes.

UTM Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim said the partnership reflects UTM’s commitment to building meaningful international collaborations aligned with its long-term strategic direction.

“This Memorandum of Understanding reflects our shared aspiration to advance knowledge, strengthen research excellence and develop globally competitive talent through meaningful international collaboration,” he said.

He added that the collaboration aligns with UTM’s ASCEND 2030 agenda, which aims to enhance research quality, expand international engagement and elevate the university’s global standing.

“Strategic partnerships with globally renowned institutions such as Peking University are essential in strengthening our research ecosystem and broadening international academic networks,”

The MoU builds upon existing collaborations between UTM’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering, as well as Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering with the School of Environment and Energy at Peking University’s Shenzhen Graduate School. These collaborations have included academic exchange visits and international industrial training placements for UTM students.

Professor Zhang Jin, Executive Vice President of Peking University and Dean of the Shenzhen Graduate School, said the partnership reflects the university’s commitment to international collaboration in addressing global challenges through high-quality research and talent development.

The collaboration is expected to provide a sustainable framework for long-term academic cooperation while contributing to closer Malaysia–China relations.
