From UTM Petroleum Engineering Students to Energy Industry Leaders

JOHOR BAHRU, 11 Dec — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) continues to demonstrate its strength in producing industry-ready graduates and future employers through the success of its alumni, Muhammad Al Siediq Ahnap and Izam Ikhwan Kamaruddin, co-founders of MISE Energy, a Malaysian energy solutions company focused on technology-driven engineering services, innovation, and talent development.

Both alumni are graduates of UTM’s Petroleum Engineering programme and currently serve as Chief Business Officer and Chief Technology Officer respectively. Their professional journey reflects a clear progression from technical training at UTM to leadership and entrepreneurship within Malaysia’s strategic energy sector.

During their studies at UTM, Al Siediq and Izam were actively engaged in academic, professional, and industry-oriented activities, which contributed to the development of their technical competence, problem-solving skills, and leadership capabilities. Exposure to real-world engineering challenges and applied learning environments at UTM played a significant role in preparing them for the demands of the energy industry and the transition into business leadership.

Today, through MISE Energy, both alumni contribute directly to Malaysia’s energy ecosystem by delivering engineering consultancy, digital solutions, energy advisory services, and industry-aligned training programmes. The company adopts a future-focused approach by integrating data-driven technologies, sustainability principles, and workforce development strategies, supporting national priorities including Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

Importantly, Al Siediq and Izam maintain strong and active engagement with the UTM community. They regularly return to the university as invited panellists, judges, and industry contributors for student programmes, engineering competitions, and entrepreneurship initiatives. Their continued involvement reflects a strong alumni–industry–university feedback loop, reinforcing UTM’s role in nurturing graduates who later become industry partners and employers.

“We believe that professional growth goes beyond individual success. It includes contributing back to the ecosystem that shaped us and supporting the next generation of engineering talent,” said Muhammad Al Siediq Ahnap.

As employers, the founders emphasise that UTM graduates demonstrate strong technical foundations, adaptability, and readiness to contribute effectively in professional engineering environments. These qualities continue to inform MISE Energy’s approach to talent recruitment, mentorship, and industry collaboration.

In strengthening industry–academia integration, MISE Energy actively participates in the UNIX Programme, a structured industry–academia talent pipeline that integrates industrial training, final-year projects, and applied research. The programme offers undergraduate and final-year students hands-on exposure within a real corporate setting, mentorship by industry professionals, and the opportunity to align academic research with industry-relevant challenges. This initiative directly supports graduate employability and workforce readiness by bridging academic learning with professional practice.

The success of Al Siediq and Izam underscores UTM’s effectiveness in producing graduates who transition seamlessly into industry leadership, entrepreneurship, and employer roles within nationally significant sectors. Their journey reflects UTM’s broader impact in developing talent that contributes to economic growth, innovation, and sustainable industry development.

As MISE Energy continues to expand, both founders remain committed to advancing technology adoption, strengthening industry collaboration, and nurturing future engineering leaders—further reinforcing UTM’s reputation as a hub for engineering excellence, industry engagement, and graduate employability.
