JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 20 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), through the School of Graduate Studies (SPS) with funding support from the Department of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) (JTNCPI), continues to strengthen its global research footprint through the UTM Nexus Attachment Programme. This pioneering initiative positions UTM among the earliest universities in Malaysia to introduce a structured postgraduate research internship grant.
The programme is a strategic grant initiative that is recognised by international partner universities and research institutions as a research internship, aligning with global practices adopted by leading universities that offer short-term research placements for Master’s and PhD candidates to enhance research quality and impact.
In its latest cycle, the programme facilitated research placements for 20 Master’s and PhD researchers across two phases, with internship durations ranging from one to three months. Participants were hosted by world-renowned universities many of which are ranked among the world’s top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings, including Imperial College London (ICL) from United Kingdom; the University of Tokyo (UTokyo), Osaka University (OU) and Kyushu University (Kyudai) from Japan; Seoul National University from South Korea; and Nanyang Techonological University from Singapore. The programme also involved leading research institutions such as the Max Planck Institute from Germany, alongside selected multinational corporations (MNCs) and government-linked companies (GLCs).

These research internships spanned institutions across Asia and Europe, including Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Germany, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Türkiye. During the placement period, participants were actively engaged in research and development (R&D) activities aligned with their thesis work, gaining access to advanced research facilities, international expertise, and global academic networks.
Beyond academic exposure, the programme also contributes significantly to the holistic development of postgraduate researchers. Participants gained valuable experience in working within diverse research cultures, strengthening their research independence, adaptability, and cross-cultural communication skills. Such exposure prepares postgraduate researchers to operate effectively within international research environments and enhances their readiness for future careers in academia, industry, and research-driven sectors.
In addition to academic institutions, selected participants were placed with industry partners comprising MNCs and GLCs. These industry-based research attachments enabled participants to engage in applied research and industry-relevant problem-solving, bridging the gap between academic research and real-world applications. This approach further strengthens university–industry collaboration while enhancing the employability and professional competencies of UTM postgraduate researchers.

The UTM Nexus Attachment Programme also aligns with national and global higher education agendas that emphasise research mobility, international collaboration, and talent development. By facilitating structured and internationally recognised research attachments, the programme supports Malaysia’s aspiration to strengthen its research ecosystem while enhancing UTM’s international visibility and academic standing.
Through its structured design and international recognition, the UTM Nexus Attachment Programme positions UTM on par with overseas universities that integrate research internships into their postgraduate research development ecosystem. The initiative supports accelerated research progress, joint publications, and sustainable international collaborations, reinforcing UTM’s aspiration as a world-class research university.
