JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 8 – Demonstrating excellence in engineering innovation, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr Shek Poi Ngian and Construction Research Centre (CRC), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) members have won the Gold Medal at the 27th Industrial Art & Technology Exhibition (INATEX 2025) for their pioneering invention, the Smart Prefabricated Steel–Concrete Composite Panel System.

The award-winning invention presents a next-generation construction technology designed to enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability in the building industry. The smart system integrates cold-formed steel framing with in-situ cast concrete infill, combining the best of both materials for exceptional durability and structural stability.

Unlike conventional methods, the smart system features standardized bolt-and-nut dry connections that enable rapid assembly and dismantling without welding, allowing for easy reusability and reducing on-site labor. Each module can be customized in thickness, reinforcement, and surface finish, and can even be factory-integrated with insulation, waterproofing, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services.

Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Shek explained that the invention aims to address pressing challenges in the construction sector, including the need for faster, safer, and more sustainable building solutions.

“This invention not only improves construction efficiency but also aligns with the principles of green and industrialized building,” he said. “By promoting reusability and reducing embodied carbon, we can make a meaningful contribution to sustainable urban development.”

Beyond its technical merits, the smart panel system offers superior thermal and acoustic insulation, making it ideal for housing projects, disaster-relief shelters, and rapid urban development. The innovation also supports Malaysia’s push toward Industrialized Building Systems (IBS), a key strategy for sustainable infrastructure growth.

Through the excellent achievement of this innovation in INATEX 2025, it has shown the determination of UTM CRC researchers in innovation and invention, as well as innovating solutions for the industry and community by producing alternative products that are sustainable, economical and high-impact project delivery. It is hoped that this innovation can be highlighted to industry players to provide more competitive options in the construction field in Malaysia, in particular. Discussions and collaborations with the industry are currently being actively carried out to realize the commercial application of this innovation.
