KYOTO, April 20 – Dr. Mohd Saiful Azimi Mahmud, a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), was honored with the Young Scientist Award at the 11th International Conference on Control, Automation and Robotics (ICCAR 2025). The prestigious event took place from April 18–20, 2025, at the Kyoto Research Park, Japan, organized by the Singapore Institute of Electronics (SIE) and co-sponsored by Beihang University (BUAA) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Robotics and Automation Society.
ICCAR 2025 gathered over 100 research submissions from participants worldwide, including countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Oman, Belgium, Japan, Kazakhstan, Norway, South Korea, Germany, Thailand, the Philippines, Canada, Denmark, India, Cyprus, Peru, Mexico, United Kingdom and the United States of America. The conference opened with welcoming remarks from Prof. Makoto Iwasaki of the Nagoya Institute of Technology (NIT), Japan, followed by keynote speeches delivered by Prof. Jianping Wang from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and Prof. Xiang Li from Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), China.
Distinguished invited speakers included Assoc. Prof. Sajid Nisar of Kyoto University of Advanced Science (KUAS), Japan, and Assoc. Prof. Lyu Chen of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The conference featured a series of presentations and discussions covering cutting-edge topics in control, automation, and robotics, promoting collaboration among researchers and industry experts.
Among the highlights of the event was the awards ceremony recognizing outstanding contributions in various categories, including Best Poster Presentation, Best Oral Presentation, Outstanding Paper, and the Young Scientist Award. Dr. Mohd Saiful Azimi received the Young Scientist Award for his research in multi-robot navigation, a distinction presented to promising researchers under the age of 40 with a proven record in research and publications. The award ceremony was held during the official conference dinner on April 19, 2025.
Dr. Saiful, who joined UTM in September 2019, specializes in mobile robotics, navigation, optimization, and artificial intelligence (AI). He is currently an Associate Fellow of Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIRO) and a member of Advanced Control Research Group (ACRG). His research efforts have been supported by several university and national grants, particularly in the field of mobile robot navigation for smart manufacturing. His participation at ICCAR 2025 was made possible through the UTM Encouragement Grant scheme, which supports young researchers in presenting their work on international platforms.
The achievement of the Young Scientist Award brings significant recognition to UTM, reflecting the university’s commitment to fostering research excellence and innovation. Such accomplishments enhance the university’s academic reputation and underscore its role in developing impactful research, inspiring the academic community, and nurturing young scientific talent on the global stage.
