JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 19 – The first MUET Preparatory Workshop (MPW) took place on October 18 and 19 at Bilik Seminar 2, Language Academy. Organized by the MyLinE Task Force, the workshop aimed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to excel in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET). This workshop is part of a broader corporate social responsibility program called Rocket to Fluency, which was launched through a partnership between UTM’s Department of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) (JTNCPI) and the Language Academy. Rocket to Fluency (RtF) is scheduled to take place four times between 2024 and 2026, with the goal of supporting language development within the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) community.
Dr. Hema Rosheny Mustafa, the MyLinE manager, led this project with strong support from team members Nurul Naimmah Hamdan, Rika Diana Busri, Nurhidayah Mohd Sharif, Nurhidayah Reman, and Iza Qistina Zulfa Zulkifli. With input from MUET experts, the team developed a comprehensive preparatory module that focuses on the four key MUET skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. This module includes essential notes on strategies for effectively tackling each section of the test, along with practice questions that closely align with the MUET format.
The workshop also featured two experienced MUET instructors, Muhammad Shahril Saibon and Norlela Noordin from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Kulai, each with over 15 years of experience in teaching MUET. They shared valuable insights, tips, and strategies to help participants effectively approach MUET questions. Additionally, the experts provided actual MUET past papers and conducted realistic simulations of the examination environment to enhance candidates’ preparation.
Participants spent 3 to 4.5 hours in intensive, hands-on sessions on each skill—reading, listening, speaking, and writing—making the workshop highly interactive, practical, and focused on real-world exam preparation. Attendees expressed their enthusiasm and satisfaction with the MUET Preparatory Workshop, highlighting its effectiveness in enhancing their understanding of the test format and requirements.
Many participants noted that the hands-on approach and interactive sessions significantly boosted their confidence in tackling the MUET examination. One participant, Dafinah, remarked, “The workshop was incredibly informative. The practical exercises helped me identify my weaknesses and equipped me with the tools to improve. I feel much more prepared for the exam now.”
Another participant, Syawal, shared his appreciation for the focus on past papers and simulations, stating, “It gave me a taste of what to expect during the actual test. The insights from experienced instructors were invaluable.” This sentiment was echoed by several others, who emphasized the importance of the personalized feedback they received during the workshop.
Organizers, including Dr. Hema Rosheny Mustafa, expressed their hopes that the workshop would not only improve participants’ MUET scores but also foster a culture of continuous learning and language development within the UTM community. They aim to make the Rocket to Fluency program a cornerstone of language education at the university, ensuring that students are well-equipped for their academic journeys.
Overall, both participants and organizers are optimistic about the future. They look forward to subsequent workshops and their positive impact on language proficiency at UTM.
