Paper Plane Competition at Selangor Aviation Show 2024 Promotes STEAM Learning and SDGs

SUBANG, Sept 14 – The Selangor Aviation Show 2024 soared to new heights with its engaging and educational Paper Plane Competition, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for science and technology among participants. Held at the SkyPark Regional Aviation Centre (RAC), the event was organized by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur and the Human Life Advancement Foundation (Human Life), with co-organization by Invest Selangor. The competition aimed to promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning through an interactive, hands-on experience.

Participants of all ages eagerly joined the competition, which showcased a unique blend of creativity and technical knowledge. Under the expert guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sa’ardin Abdul Aziz from UTM, assisted by Mdm. Siti Nur Hana Mamat from Human Life, students were introduced to the principles of aerodynamics and flight physics. Equipped with this knowledge, they designed paper planes to maximize airtime and distance, applying STEAM concepts to their innovative creations.

The competition was divided into three categories:

Category A (7-10 years old) introduced younger participants to basic concepts such as lift, drag, and gravity.
Category B (11-15 years old) challenged students to apply more complex principles, including wing design and weight distribution.
Category C (16 years and above) involved older students and adults, who used advanced engineering concepts to achieve optimal flight performance.

Each category demonstrated an impressive turnout, reflecting the participants’ excitement to put theory into practice. As they crafted and tested their paper planes, participants showcased critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity—core skills in STEAM education. The sense of achievement was palpable as participants watched their planes soar, with many expressing pride in the knowledge they gained and the innovations they developed.

This hands-on competition aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). By fostering STEAM education across all age groups, the event provided equal opportunities for students to explore scientific concepts in a fun and engaging environment. It highlighted the accessibility and enjoyment of science and technology, inspiring participants to consider future careers in aviation, aerospace, and engineering.
