QS-Construction Career Carnival: Shaping Future Graduate Employability

JOHOR BAHRU, 21st June – The Department of Quantity Surveying from the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU) at UTM organized a career promotion event entitled QS-Construction Career Carnival 2023. The two-day event was held from June 21st, 2023, until June 22nd, 2023, in the FABU Convention Hall.

The event was officiated by the Dean of FABU, Prof. Sr. Dr. Kherun Nita Ali, and the Director of UTM Career Centre, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Che Rozid bin Mamat, was also invited to give a warm welcome to representatives from various organizations that attended the event.

The carnival holds the promise of propelling job creation for future graduates from a background in Quantity Surveying and Construction. Various prominent organizations were invited and participated in the carnival to contribute to the spirit of advancing UTM graduate quality and marketability.

Companies such as Glodon (M) Sdn Bhd and KAS Juruukur Bahan Sdn Bhd, as well as professional bodies such as the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), conducted knowledge transfer sessions to provide real-life industry experience for future graduates to apply in their future employment and open new perspectives to inspire the graduates to aim high in their careers.

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), as the government representative, also participated by presenting a concise briefing session to introduce the organization to the students.

The significant roles of CIDB in the graduates’ career advancement were conveyed, and many students expressed their intention to develop prospective companies and competencies in their future endeavors through the facilitation of CIDB.

Ultimately, the highlight of the program was the interview sessions held to assist future graduates in finding and securing jobs.

The companies available were invited based on their prominence in the construction industry to ensure positive career growth for the department’s future graduates.

Nine companies participated in the interview session, and the department is proud to announce that the majority of the participating students secured a job after graduation as a result of this event.

Hence, the saying, “killing two birds with one stone,” as the department successfully enhances graduate employability as well as helping the companies find future protégés for their companies.

In addition to this, a few organizations also set up exhibitions for the two-day event, as well as the professional bodies associated with the department, such as the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (Johor branch).

Many students visited the booths to gather information about the organizations and possible future collaborations in the coming years.

Among the exhibitors were also the two Research Groups (RG) in the Department of Quantity Surveying (Construction Economy Law and Policy RG and Building Information Modelling RG), aiming to encourage future graduates to join research projects.

Representatives from both RGs were present throughout the entire event to actively share information about the RGs with undergraduate students. Numerous students expressed their interest and provided their information for the RG database for future contact and discussion.

Additionally, the department’s postgraduate course program, Construction Contract Management (CCM), and research program also joined the exhibition to expand future graduates’ knowledge in the wide range of directions they can pursue after graduation.

Beyond finding future jobs for future graduates, this event aims to foster future collaboration among the participating organizations, department members, and students for future knowledge advancement and academic contributions to solving multiple issues in the construction industry.

As this remarkable event concludes, the anticipation heightens for the department’s future graduates to become significant contributors to the national construction industry and for future collaborations with industry players to apply the department’s technical abilities to the advancement of the construction industry in Malaysia.
