JOHOR BAHRU, 16 Sept – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and SkyeChip Sdn Bhd was signed today in a commitment to collaborate on research and development (R&D) and academic activities that aims to accelerate AI and High-Performance Computing sector.

Held in the UTM Johor Bahru campus,  the signing ceremony was represented by UTM’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail with the presence of SkyeChip’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Fong Swee Kiang.

SkyeChip Sdn Bhd is a Malaysia-based design company dedicated to providing state-of-the-art Intellectual Property (IP) and Integrated Circuit (IC) solutions for high-performance computing.

The relationship between UTM and SkyeChip began in 2021 when SkyeChip’s engineers were invited to deliver industrial lectures and recruit UTM students through internship programs.

Hence, moving forward,  Prof. Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, in his speech, said UTM is pleased that both entities have decided to commit further to other areas of expertise and services.

“We hope that through this collaboration, more mutual understanding will be achieved in the future. This can be in terms of expertise sharing and enhancing collaboration for research and industry-driven curriculum, active learning engagements, as well as applied research and technical training.

“We envision that such a strategic alliance between the academic institution and our industrial partners would generate more impactful outcomes towards excellent knowledge creation and universal prosperity,” he said.

This strategic cooperation enables sharing and exchanging of knowledge, ideas and insights between UTM and SkyeChip for research and student development with several initiatives that have been discussed, such as setting up a satellite lab, industrial training for students and academic staff, final year project sponsorship and industrial grant.

“In addition to this cooperative relationship between UTM and SkyeChip, it is hoped that it would further enhance the global prominence of both parties nationally and globally,” said Prof. Fauzi.
