The New Collaborative Learning Among Universities in Malaysia: School’s Out Academy

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Institutions of Engineering and Technology (UTM IET) On Campus, had successfully carried out a programme called School’s Out Academy (SOA).

It was held for 4 days from 9th until 12th March 2022.

School’s Out Academy collaborated with 6 other universities in Malaysia: Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), Mahsa University, and Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP).

The programme was officiated by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs) of UTM, Prof. Dr. Shamsul bin Sahibuddin

According to the director of the programme, Ms. Ng Ying Shan, this programme was held to provide exposure and experience to the students in creating innovations for each problem statement given according to their respective groups.

Several talks such as ‘Design Thinking’, ‘Idea Pitching Skills’ and ‘How to Win Competition’ were also held to help the students throughout the programme.

These talks helped the students in generating innovative ideas, which achieved the needs of the industry and could be beneficial for longer terms.

We are confident that the innovative ideas from the students can help in solving the industrial problems.

Besides, a sharing session on Capstone Project was also held with the collaborators’ advisor.

After considering the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, the programme was conducted online to prevent any Covid-19 infection among students.

Therefore, it was a challenge for the programme committee members to choose the best platform so that the students could understand and deepen the essence of the activities carried out.

The programme constantly received support from the programme advisors, Ts. Dr. Rashidah Arsat and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Leow Pei Ling, and also the student advisors, Ms. Azira Natasha Abu Yamin, Ms. Azira Ahmad, and Mr. Muhammad Faidzal Mohamad Rasol.
