Students from the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) won both the Malaya Makerthon 2020 competition and Make it Challenge 2020 competition. A team of four students consisted of Omar Khaled Abouelmagd (Third-year Mechatronics Engineering Student), Lim Wei Sheng (Third-year Mechatronics Engineering Student), Syed Abdul Quddus (Third-year Software Engineering Student), and Lai Xiao Tong (Third-year Bioinformatics Student) had managed to secure a champion place for both competitions.

The Malaya Makerthon 2020 was organized by Universiti Malaya and CREST from 7th to 8th March 2020 with the theme of global issues  focusing on social, economic, and political and environmental issues that affect humans. These issues need to be resolved in order to improve the livelihoods of people all over the globe while protecting the environment at the same time.

The problem statements consisted of some global issues recognised by the United Nations. These global issues are issues that generally require cooperation from multiple countries in order to resolve it. In this competition, the team managed to become the Champion and received a cash prize of RM1,500. Along with that, they also won the Best Pitching Award for this competition.

On the other hand, the Make it Challenge 2020 is a competition that was organised by Sunway University and MAGIC from 7th to 24th September 2020. This competition focused on building and implementing a solution in Sunway City. In this competition, students were able to participate in an exclusive entrepreneurship workshop by UC Berkeley, gain access to mentors from industry, learn about Industry 4.0, and solve real-life problems and help to develop the future city in Sunway. In this competition, the team had also managed to become the Champion and received a research grant with a total fund of RM6,000.
