The perception towards mural art has changed and we have seen many places being designated as artistic hubs where people express their ideas in art form. Murals are more than just turning empty walls into work of art. Murals in fact have the ability to make the environment more colourful and vibrant. They are a form of artistic expression, with the ability to engage the community and create a sense of belonging. Realising the potential that mural art has to offer, the student leader committee of Kolej Tun Razak (JKM KTR) organised a mural art competition based on the theme ‘Active Lifestyle’, which was open to all KTR residents. The only requirement was that the design should be an original work made by the students with approval from Office of Corporate Affairs and Office of Asset and Development UTM.

10 March 2019 marked a significant event for the KTRians when six groups of Kolej Tun Razak residents took part in this competition. Each group was designated a wall space at blocks K01, K07, K15, K16 and K23 respectively. With its theme active lifestyle, all designs were uniquely original. The aim of this competition was to promote artwork while at the same time uplift the physical look of the walls around the residential college.

The value of such activity lies in the communication the participants made, the process before the outcome was achieved and the relationships they made upon completion. We hope that in the future more emphasis would be put into supporting and nurturing the students’ creative minds as this will definitely have a lasting effect on the participants.
