A 3-day Chinese Cultural Festival at Language Academy, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities

Johor Bahru, 6th March – Language Academy, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH) has conducted a 3-day Chinese cultural festival in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) International Student society (UTM ISS-China) in the effort to introduce Chinese culture to UTM students. The event, which was held from 25 February to 27 February, was organised by Language Academy’s Mandarin teachers, Mr Zaid Muhammad Shafie and Ms Sally Zhangyou, who is from China. The event was officiated by Prof Dr Durrishah Idrus, UTM’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) accompanied by esteemed guests from UTM international office, Associate Director (Student Services and Global Education Experience) Prof Dr Norhaniza Sarmin and Language Academy (FSSH) Chair, Associate Prof Dr Hanita Hassan.

On the first day of the festival, 4 booths were set up where each booth displayed Chinese calligraphy, traditional attires, snacks as well as traditional games. Volunteers from UTM ISS-China were at the booths to provide assistance and explanation to the visitors. On the second day, visitors participated in interesting hands-on activities such as making Chinese paper craft, writing in Chinese calligraphy as well as making Chinese chicken and vegetarian dumplings. On the last day of the festival, students from Language Academy’s Mandarin classes took part in the Chinese talent show where they sang Chinese songs, did Chinese cheers as well as recited Chinese poems. Subsequently, students and visitors also played a variety of Chinese culture related pop-quiz on Kahoot!.
