JOHOR BAHRU, 5 December 2016 – A total of RM 1 million was donated to the Endowment Fund of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) by the Johor Port Berhad as part of efforts to strengthen the fund.
The contribution was presented by the Chairman of Johor Port, Dato ‘Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh to UTM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Ir. Dr. Wahid Omar said in a simple ceremony held at the Banquet Hall, Sultan Ibrahim Chancellery Building, Johor Bahru campus.
The main purpose of this endowment fund establishment is to provide scholarships to UTM students in the undergraduate programme who excel in their studies. In addition, this fund is also used to sponsor a professorial chair, research, publication of scientific materials and high impact programmes.
In March 2013, Johor Port signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UTM for sponsorship of the RM5 million to UTM Endowment Fund, with which RM1 million will be donated annually. So far, a total of RM3 million has been donated to the Endowment Fund.
The Vice Chancellor also informed that the UTM Marine Technology Centre changed its name to the UTM- Johor Port Marine Technology Centre as a tribute to that corporate entity in respect of the contributions made.
Since its establishment in 2009, UTM Endowment Fund has collected a fund of RM81 million and successfully sponsored a total of 600 student scholarships.
An endowment fund was established with the purpose of leading the education, welfare and to assist. This practice will hopefully contribute to a culture of contributing which in turn can enrich the DNA of individuals and institutions.
Also attending the ceremony were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Dr. Azlan Ab. Rahman, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Internationalization), Prof. Dr. Rose Alinda Alias, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dato ‘Dr. Ismail Abd. Aziz and Chief Executive Officer of Johor Port Berhad, Tuan Hj. Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim.
