JOHOR BAHRU, 11 November 2015 – A student team from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) became the champion at the Malaysian Industrial Mathematical Modelling Challenge (MIMMC) 2015.
The winning team comprised Tay Chai Jian, Teoh Wei Kee and Lim Wei Keat from the Department of Mathematical Science, Faculty of Science. They brought home a cash prize of RM2,000.00.
The MIMMC 2015 Chair, Dr. Zaitul Marlizawati Zainuddin said that 34 teams from Public Institution of Higher Learning nationwide participated in the competition but only five were shortlisted and made it to the final round.
“The five teams shortlisted to the final round were from UTM, IIUM, UKM and Universiti Teknologi MARA, Perak campus.
“This competition is very much in line with the National Higher Education Strategic Plan and the National Graduate Employability Blueprint 2012-2017 which emphasize critical-thinking abilities to devise solutions to grand challenges,” said Dr. Zaitul.
MIMM 2015 was organized by the UTM Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (UTM-CIAM) in collaboration with the Department of Science Mathematics, Faculty of Science.
MIMM 2015 provided students from higher learning institutions the experience to harness their intellectual capacity, knowledge and skills in solving problems using mathematical modelling.
The first runner up of the competition was the student team from the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), while the second runner up was the team from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The fourth and fifth placing went to IIUM and UiTM with each team receiving RM 500.00 as consolation prize. All finalists received their respective prizes from the UTM Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Dr. Ismail Abd Aziz.
