KUALA LUMPUR, 17 January – UTM will collaborate with the National Heart Institute of Malaysia (IJN) to do research on treatment and management of heart diseases.

The matter was discussed during a visit by IJN Chief Executive Officer cum Senior Consultant Cardiologist, Tan Sri Dr Robaayah Zambahari and her team, Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib (Clinical Director, Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Heart Programme), Dr Mazeni Alwi (Senior Consultant Cardiologist) and Dr Suhaini Kadiman (Consultant Anaesthesiologist) to the UTM International Campus on 17 January 2012.

The IJN delegation was greeted by the UTM Pro Chancellor, Tan Sri Dr Yahya Awang and Vice-Chancellor, Zaini Ujang.

Among the matters discussed include artificial heart, heart pumping device, imaging technology, patient monitoring and others.

Also present in the discussion was UTM Faculty of Bioscience and Bioengineering  Dean, Prof Jasmy Yunus. In general, UTM and IJN had agreed to do joint collaboration for a period of three years for three programmes which will make use of the research infrastructure in UTM and IJN Hospital.

It was anticipated that nine PhD students will participate in the said joint research. Details and the research focus will be deliberated in due course.

UTM Pro Chancellor, Tan Sri Dr Yahya Awang, a renowned Cardiologist in Malaysia who had led IJN, in his statement said he hopes that the collaboration will enable them to bring high impact, cutting edge results in heart surgery and medical practice in Malaysia.

Meanwhile Tan Sri Dr Robaayah said that IJN is ready to collaborate with UTM in developing impactful heart research which would contribute to advanced knowledge in the field.

Besides IJN, UTM will also collaborate with three other renowned technology-based universities in Germany in heart surgery and medical science namely, Aachen, Berlin and Ilmenau; and Imperial College of London. At the moment Aachen and Ilmenau have been working closely together with UTM in various fields including Health science and Biomedical Engineering.
