PUTRAJAYA, Feb 18 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) proudly hosted the 11th Asia Pacific Structural Engineering and Construction Conference (APSEC) 2025 at The Everly Putrajaya. Organized by the Faculty of Civil Engineering (FKA) at UTM, the conference focused on the theme “Bridging Innovation and Sustainability for Tomorrow’s Infrastructure.” The event brought together global experts to discuss the latest advancements in structural engineering and construction, emphasizing sustainable practices and innovative solutions for the future of infrastructure development. APSEC 2025 was co-organized by the UTM Institute of Noise and Vibration (IKG), the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (Southern Branch), and UTM Alumni.
The conference was officially opened by YB Dato’ Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the Minister of Works. In his speech, he emphasized the vital role of innovation and sustainability in shaping national infrastructure projects and the need for collaboration among professionals and stakeholders to develop sustainable, forward-thinking solutions that address challenges such as climate change and rapid technological advancements.
Representing UTM, YBrs. Prof. Ts. Dr. Edy Tonnizam Mohamad, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), expressed his enthusiasm for the conference’s role in tackling current and future engineering challenges. He reaffirmed the importance of APSEC 2025 as a platform for knowledge sharing and industry collaboration.
Before concluding his visit, YB Dato’ Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi toured the exhibition booths presented by the event sponsors. The exhibition showcased cutting-edge technologies, innovative materials, and sustainable construction solutions, providing attendees with firsthand insights into the industry’s latest advancements. His visit underscored the significance of collaboration between industry and academia in driving progress within the construction and engineering sectors.
Under the leadership of YBrs. Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Norhisham Bakhary, Chairman of APSEC 2025 and a dedicated organizing committee, the conference was a resounding success. One of the key highlights of APSEC 2025 was the lineup of distinguished keynote speakers. Professor Dr. Jun Li, an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow from Curtin University, Australia, led discussions on novel data analytics and artificial intelligence applications in monitoring ageing civil infrastructure. Associate Professor Dr. Abbas Aminmansour from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign shared his expertise on structural steel design and the sustainability of tall buildings. Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Salman Leong, the founding Director of the Institute of Noise & Vibration at UTM, provided invaluable insights into machinery, structural vibrations, noise, and acoustics in the ASEAN region.
The conference also featured the highly anticipated Technical Insight Series. Associate Professor Dr. Roslli Noor Mohamed, an expert in concrete materials and precast concrete from UTM, presented on “Steel Fibre Innovations: Transforming the Precast Industry.” Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Mohammadreza Vafaei, a specialist in seismic design and structural health monitoring, delivered a session on “Performance-Based Seismic Design of Structures.” Additionally, Professor Ir. Dr. Azlan Adnan, a seismic expert involved in national design codes, spoke on “Earthquake-Resistant Structural Design Using Eurocode 8.”
Beyond the conference sessions, APSEC 2025 served as a vital networking hub for academics, researchers, engineers, and industry professionals. Attendees participated in technical discussions, keynote addresses, and a post-conference workshop focused on Performance-Based Seismic Design of Structures.
