FKA Hosts Pioneering BIM Professional Training Program

JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 23 – In a significant stride towards embracing modern construction technologies, the Faculty of Civil Engineering (FKA), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) successfully hosted a Building Information Modelling (BIM) Professional Training Program on 18-19 August and 22-23 September 2024. This event took place at the BIM Lab, D02, FKA, involving 25 participants from various departments including Structure and Materials, Geotechnics and Transportation, as well as Water and Environmental Engineering.

The program was launched with a welcoming speech by the Dean of FKA, Associate Professor Dr. Suhaimi Abu Bakar @ Mohd Ramli, who emphasised the transformative impact of BIM on the construction industry. “BIM is transforming the way projects are designed and managed, enabling more efficient coordination and reducing errors across the entire project lifecycle,” he stated. His remarks underscored FKA’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in engineering education and practice.

Over the four-day program, participants were immersed in practical training, exploring foundational and advanced aspects of BIM using tools like Revit Structure and Tekla. Under the expert guidance of guest speaker, Ir. Ts. Mohd Faiz from the BIM Unit at Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR), the training sessions covered a range of topics from basic modelling techniques to advanced structural workflows. These sessions not only enhanced participants’ understanding of Revit and Tekla but also demonstrated how BIM technology supports greater efficiency and collaboration in engineering projects. The knowledge transfer between the speaker and participants created an engaging environment conducive to learning.

The program ended with a closing ceremony, celebrated with a group photo session featuring participants, the Dean, and the guest speaker. The event not only marked the successful conclusion of the training but also highlighted the collaborative spirit of the program. “We are immensely proud of the enthusiasm and engagement from all participants and are grateful for the efforts of everyone involved in making this event a success,” remarked the Dean during the closing remarks.
