On 16th September 2024, in conjunction with Malaysia Day, the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), celebrated a significant milestone by launching its Alumni Japan Chapter at the prestigious University of Tokyo (東京大学, Tōkyō daigaku – Tōdai), Japan, during the Malaysia Japan Visionaries Conference 2024. The event not only marked the strengthening of ties between Malaysia and Japan but also underscored MJIIT’s pivotal role in advancing Japanese-oriented engineering education as part of Malaysia’s long-standing Look East Policy, initiated in the 1980s.
With 2,346 alumni making strides in various industries, government agencies, academic institutions and businesses, MJIIT has cultivated a diverse and influential alumni community. Of these alumni, over 50 are currently residing in Japan, either pursuing advanced studies or contributing to leading industries and research universities.
The Japan Chapter was established to unite this exceptional group, creating a platform for networking, career guidance, and collaboration, while fostering the strong spirit of senpai-kohai (senpai 先輩, “senior”; kōhai 後輩, “junior”), the Japanese mentorship tradition that has been deeply embedded in MJIIT’s ethos.
At the heart of this initiative is the concept of ongaeshi (恩返し)—the Japanese tradition of expressing gratitude by giving back. The establishment of the Alumni Japan Chapter is a reflection of the deep respect MJIIT and its alumni hold for Japan’s role in supporting MJIIT’s growth. From its inception, MJIIT has benefitted from Japan’s expertise, resources, and educational frameworks. Now, through this chapter, MJIIT alumni have an opportunity to reciprocate and strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.
The Alumni Japan Chapter aims to serve as a bridge between the two nations, embodying the core values of MJIIT’s mission: to produce well-rounded, globally competitive engineers and innovators. Alumni chapters like this one are essential in promoting professional connections, sharing knowledge, and cultivating opportunities for collaboration across borders. They provide a space for alumni to give back not just to their alma mater but also to the communities and industries they are part of, contributing to both Malaysia and Japan’s development.
The Alumni Japan Chapter represents more than just a networking hub; it is a family bound by shared experiences and a collective vision for the future. In a globalized world, alumni play a vital role in fostering international relations. They act as ambassadors for their alma mater and home country, bringing insights, innovations, and expertise that benefit both Malaysia and Japan. Through collaborative projects, mentorship, and industry linkages, the alumni community helps pave the way for future generations of engineers, scientists, and leaders.
The launch of this chapter during Malaysia Day is symbolic of the deep-rooted partnership between Malaysia and Japan. The event reflects the commitment of both nations to continue building strong educational and industrial ties, ensuring that the legacy of the Look East Policy lives on through future generations.
The MJIIT Alumni Japan Chapter is poised to grow into a cornerstone of Malaysia-Japan relations, providing a platform for intellectual exchange, career advancement, and a shared sense of purpose among alumni who continue to impact the world with their skills and knowledge.
As the Alumni Japan Chapter grows, it will continue to uphold the spirit of mutual respect and collaboration that defines MJIIT. The chapter not only serves the alumni community but also enhances the cultural and economic bonds between Malaysia and Japan, contributing to a shared future of progress and innovation. Through this chapter, MJIIT is not only honouring its roots but also paving the way for a brighter future—one in which alumni play a crucial role in bridging nations and advancing global engineering excellence.
