OSHE UTM Achieves Recertification According To ISO 45001:2018

The Office of Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment (OSHE) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is pleased to announce that it has successfully renewed its ISO 45001:2018 certification from 2024 to 2027. OSHE UTM has been ISO 45001:2018 certified since July 16, 2021, as indicated in Figure 1. This achievement demonstrates OSHE UTM’s commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for all stakeholders.

OSHE UTM has been assessed and found to comply with the requirements of the International Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) for providing advisory, promotional, inspection, monitoring, and investigation services related to occupational safety and health activities at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

An auditor, Mr. Balakrishnan Ramasamy from CARE Certification International (M) Sdn. Bhd., conducted the recertification audit, which involved a comprehensive review of OSHE UTM’s safety manual, procedures, and documentation. The recertification audit of UTM’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) was conducted by Mr. Balakrishnan for three days. Day 1 took place at the Section of OSHE UTM in Kuala Lumpur on 22nd February 2024 (Figure 2), while Days 2 and 3 were conducted at the Office of OSHE UTM in Johor Bahru from 26th to 27th February 2024 (Figure 3).

As a leading institution of higher learning in Malaysia, UTM places paramount importance on the well-being of its faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Both the Section of OSHE UTM Kuala Lumpur and the main office of OSHE UTM Johor Bahru have demonstrated compliance with the stringent requirements of ISO 45001:2018 through a meticulous assessment of the recertification audit. The audit findings commend OSHE UTM’s robust implementation of safety measures, including regular risk assessments, safety training programmes, and emergency preparedness protocols. The recertification signifies OSHE UTM’s dedication to continuously improving occupational health and safety practices. Moving forward, OSHE UTM remains steadfast in its mission to provide a safe and conducive environment for teaching, learning, and research activities.

OSHE UTM has implemented several initiatives to enhance occupational health and safety on its campuses, in addition to meeting the ISO 45001:2018 standard. These initiatives include:

– Introduction of innovative safety awareness campaigns to educate the university community about potential hazards and preventive measures.

– Expansion of safety training programmes to equip faculty, staff, and students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to respond effectively to emergencies.

– Enhancement of safety communication channels to facilitate reporting of safety concerns and incidents in a timely manner.

With the successful recertification of ISO 45001:2018 from 2024 until 2027, OSHE UTM reaffirms its position as a leader in promoting occupational health and safety standards in Malaysian higher education institutions.
