Faculty members from the Department of Mathematical Sciences in the Faculty of Science at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) recently engaged with eight academic counterparts from Universitas Gadjah Mada Indonesia (UGM) during an exclusive workshop at UTM to deliberate on opportunities for international cooperation. The event took place on November 9, 2023, at UTM HelixS, Faculty of Science.
The workshop, titled ‘Half-Day Workshop on International Collaboration Initiatives between Math@UTM & Math@UGM,’ was initiated by Professor Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin (UTM) and Professor Dr. Indah Emilia Wijayanti (UGM), both affiliated with the algebra groups of their respective universities. The workshop aimed to strategize and facilitate discussions regarding potential collaborative teaching and research activities, specifically within the field of mathematical sciences that would benefit both UTM and UGM. To ensure a tailored and effective discussion, participants were grouped based on their research expertise, allowing in-depth discussions aligned with specific needs and interests. During the session, participants openly shared their thoughts and experiences, fostering a rich exchange of ideas, insights, and perspectives.
The group discussion concluded with several noteworthy points. Among these were considerations for active participation in research seminars, facilitating mobility opportunities for both students and staff, collaborative efforts in the organization of conferences, and the potential for editorial roles in journals based on areas of expertise: algebra & analysis, applied mathematics, statistics, and operational research.
The workshop stands as a testament to the potential for impactful global collaborations, propelling advancements in the field of mathematics for both institutions. It is hoped that the plan outlined in this meeting will be set into motion soon.
