Strengthening Satellite Lab FABU UTM – JTU Sabah on Sabah Geocentric Datum (SGD2020) and Knowledge Transfer Activities

22 September 2023 – The Sabah Land and Surveys Department (JTU) and Geomatic Innovation Research Group (GnG), Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying (FABU), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) recently organized a workshop on GNSS Processing and Baseline Network Adjustment for Sabah Geocentric Datum (SGD2020). In 2020, UTM supported JTU in the realization of SGD2020. Due to COVID-19, the training was provided via the Zoom platform earlier, and the current workshop is a follow-up knowledge transfer between the university and the agency. This workshop includes FABU, UTM – JTU, and Sabah Satellite Lab activities.

Opening speech by Datuk Sr Bernard Liew Chau Min, Director of JTU, Sabah.

Participants were presented with twelve modules, seven theoretical and five hands-on during the workshop. The modules were taught by a team of lecturers from UTM, UTHM, and UiTM, all experts in their respective fields.

Dr Wan Anom Wan Aris, senior lecturer from FBES, UTM, presented a lecture on Coordinate Transformation and Map Projection.

The workshop was attended by 11 officers from JTU and four representatives from a licensed land surveyor firm based in Sabah. All attendees were provided with a detailed methodology for establishing SGD2020. The workshop also covered the maintenance and application of the new geocentric datum, which was discussed towards the end of the session. This paved the way for further collaboration between JTU and UTM.
