JOHOR BAHRU – A Letter of Collaboration (LoC) was successfully signed on 26 June 2021 between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and World Power Production (WPP) Energy to enable collaboration in the field of sustainable energy.

WPP Energy, a company based in Switzerland has long history of establishing itself as a repository for disruptive energy and environmental technologies.

The collaboration between the Laser Centre, Faculty of Science, UTM and WPP was formalised in the form of a Letter of Collaboration signed on the 27th April of this year.  An online document exchange ceremony was held to highlight a recent collaboration between two institutions on unconventional water electrolysis green hydrogen generators using laser.

In the ceremony, UTM was represented by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail while WPP Energy GmbH was represented by the Chief Operating Officer & Chief Innovation Officer, Mr. Troy E. MacDonald.

The collaboration agreed by both parties covered the academic partnership and cooperation between UTM and WPP Energy that include the exchange of academic staff and students (undergraduate and postgraduates), Research and Development (R&D) in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), joint seminar/conferences and co-supervision of postgraduate students.

Prof. Fauzi in his statement after the signing ceremony said that UTM has always been putting high interest in identifying research collaboration and networking particularly in green technology.

“The collaborative effort seeks to reduce carbon levels in Malaysia and also globally. In recent years, the hydrogen gas have attracted much attention as a clean fuel due to the exhaustion in fossil fuel supply and global warming.

“The technology has also been chosen as a contributor to support the upcoming “HyFi” Hydrogen Trading Platform, an initiative initiated by WPP,” said Prof. Fauzi.

Prof. Fauzi also gave a special acknowledgement to WPP-Malaysian representative; Agile Strategies Sdn. Bhd and Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) for making this cooperation possible.

The event was also supported by representatives from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and Nano Malaysia Berhad.
