The former Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Prof. Datuk Ir. Dr Wahid Omar was awarded the professional engineering certification, the ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineers (ACPE) on 11 September 2020.
The certification was awarded by the ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer Coordinating Committee (ACPECC) upon recommendation of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) Monitoring Committee.
The qualifications required for ACPE certification included having an accredited engineering degree recognized by BEM, and possess current and valid professional registration with Board of Engineers Malaysia.
The applicant is also required to acquire practical and diversified experience of not less than seven years after graduation or at least two years of which shall be responsible for, or in charge of significant engineering work.
In addition to academic qualifications as well as experiences in engineering work, applicants are also required to possess the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points at satisfactory level with no record of serious violation on technical, professional or ethical standards, local and international, for the practice of engineering.
The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience gained both formally and informally during work period beyond any initial training (e.g. a record of experience, learning and application).
Upon recommendation of BEM Monitoring Committee, an application as ACPE will be submitted to ACPECC for approval. Successful candidate will be accorded the title of ACPE/MY.
Under the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Engineering (MRA), a professional engineer or practitioner who holds the nationality of an ASEAN Member Country and who possesses qualifications and experience that comply with the requirements specified may apply to be placed on the ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineers Register (ACPER) and accorded the title of ASEAN Chartered Professional engineer (ACPE).
The Professional Regulatory Authority of each participating ASEAN Country will authorize a Monitoring Committee (MC) to receive and process applications from its professional engineers or practitioners for registration as ACPE and to maintain the ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineers Register (ACPER).
