Two teams of undergraduate students from the School of Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences (SKBSK), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia emerged as the winner and won two awards from Innovate Malaysia Design Competition 2019 (IMDC’2019), held at Dewan Utama, TARUC, Pulau Pinang on 22 July 2019.
Innovate Malaysia Design Competition is the largest design competition in Malaysia, open to all third year and final year engineering, computer science, IT, and science/mathematics degree students. The goal of the competition is to promote innovative culture in engineering design work, tackle real-world problems with practical engineering solutions, and churn out brightest talents for product development, further research, and commercialization. Technology companies, including Dassault Systémes SOLIDWORKS, Google, Intel, Keysight, MathWorks, Microsoft, SAS, and SilTerra, worked together to co-organize the competition.
The first team was led by Ooi Tze Kean with team members Low Wee Li and Fung Shu Xin and their project titled “Smart Home-Based Heart Monitoring Device Design Based on ARM-SoC Technology for Self-Detection of Cardiovascular Diseases” had successfully won the Intel technology track champion with prize money worth of RM 5,000 together with the Intel Core I7 gaming NUC to each team member.
The 2nd team was led by Ng Kai Xin with team members Jessica Teoh Wai Ting and Chai Ying Yee and their project titled “Intelligent Cardiovascular Disease Detection and Monitoring Framework for Public Community at Urban Area” bagged the 2nd runner up of Google technology track champion with prize money worth of RM 1,000.
Incredibly, both projects were supervised by Dr. Hau Yuan Wen, a research fellow from UTM-IJN Cardiovascular Engineering Centre, and also a senior lecturer from the School of Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences, Faculty of Engineering. Dr. Hau’s expertise is on embedded System-on-Chip design targeted for biomedical instrumentation.
Congratulations to both teams!
