CHENNAI, INDIA, 2nd March 2019 – A researcher and an academician from the School of Biomedical Engineering and Health Science, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Ir. Dr. Malarvili Balakrishnan was awarded the 4th Venus International Women Awards (VIWA) 2019.
The award was presented to her at the 4th Annual Women’s Meet (AWM 2019) which was held at Hotel Radha Regent, Chennai, India to acknowledge her contribution and achievement in the field of Biomedical Signal Processing.
The award was established in 2016 and is given to dedicated professional women working in the field of science and technology and who have shown exceptional records of significant contributions demonstrated through their courage, creativity, excellence, originality and endurance.

The Health and Medical Science award is divided into ten categories (Biomedical Signal Processing, Biotechnology, Dentistry, Ethnomedicine and Ethnopharmacology, Food and Nutrition Research, Geriatrics, Macrobiology, Optometry, Pharmacy and Physiology). A number of professional women from various fields who are actively engaged in continuous service in research and academic received their awards at the ceremony. Hundreds of professional women were nominated including Ir. Dr. Malarvili Balakrishnan. Eligible nominees were vetted and selected based on the Apex Board meetings and Expert committee report.

Two other UTM award recipients include Prof Noamie Salim who won the award for the Science category and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norhani Bakri in the Sociology category. Apart from the three UTM staff awarded at the event, three other academicians from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM) also received awards in their respective categories.
Other recipients were from Singapore Nanyang Tech, Bahrain and various universities around India. The VIWA awards were instituted in the year 2016 by the Centre for Advanced Research and Design (CARD) of the Venus International Foundation (VIF). It is presented annually during the Annual Women’s Meet (AWM) that is conducted during the month of March. The scheme that is used to determine the recipient of each award includes a specific Criteria, Standards, Regulations, Application Form, Expert Committee and Judging Process that are governed by the Board of Trust.
Congratulations to all award recipients from UTM. The recognition received by our UTM staff has shown that our expertise is being recognised worldwide which will enable us to contribute more in the field of academic and research both locally and internationally.
