SOUTH KOREA, 14 June 2016 – The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Prof. Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail represented UTM as an invited speaker addressing a topic on Advanced Nanomaterials for Water and Wastewater Treatment: From Laboratory Exploration to Industry Adoption at the QS Subject Focus Summit on Materials Science & Engineering held in Seoul National University, South Korea.
The theme for this edition’s summit was Convergence in Action: Materials Science & Engineering as The Central Subject. His speech was delivered in the Managing Technological Convergence: Connecting Knowledge, Bridging Disciplines, Going Global track during the second day of the summit.
He highlighted the directions and guidelines to the research community regarding the future outlook and roadmap of the application of nanotechnology to heighten the performance of the existing water and wastewater treatment processes at the bench-scale and commercialization levels.
The summit was jointly organized by QS Asia and Seoul National University. The main objective of the summit was to bridge geographic distances and to build upon the ‘cultural similarities’ of academic discipline, in this case, Materials Science and Engineering.
This is even more relevant in this time and age where globalization is the key to better collaboration, to improve quality of life of tens of thousands of people. The summit covered three tracks:
1. Managing Technological Convergence: Connecting Knowledge, Bridging Discipline, Going Global
2. Laying the Foundation for Interdisciplinary Learning: Teaching The Central Subject
3. An Entrepreneurial Research Agenda: Meeting Social, Environmental and Economic Challenges
By bringing together senior leaders from academia and other stakeholders around these themes, the summit provides a platform for the sharing of new ideas and best practices, as well as a unique opportunity for networking and dialogue.
Apart from Prof Ahmad Fauzi, other distinguished speakers include Prof John Wang of National University of Singapore, Prof Yuan-Hua Lin from Tsinghua University, Prof Sang Im Yoo from Seoul National University, Prof Yukihiro Shimogaki from University of Tokyo and Prof Manfred Martin from RWTH Aachen University.
