Universiti Teknologi Malaysia has been ranked 93 in the Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2015. UTM is the only Malaysian university which made the cut.

This is indeed a commendable position as the ranking lists only the top 100 universities in the category.

THE BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings is powered by Thomson Reuters and involves only institutions in 22 countries classified as “emerging economies” by the Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange (FTSE) Group’s Country Classification. The 22 countries are Brazil, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Chile, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Russia and UAE

The ranking exercise uses the same methodology as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. However, the methodology has been recalibrated to better reflect the characteristics and development priorities of universities in emerging economies.

13 performance indicators are used to assess each university. The performance indicators are grouped into five areas encapsulating teaching (30 per cent), research (30 per cent), citations (30 per cent), industry income (2.5 per cent), and international outlook (7.5 per cent).

University ranking is used not only to enhance the status and reputation of a university, but more importantly it offers information for potential students in selecting a university in which to pursue their studies.
